Social networks are Internet sites formed by communities of individuals with interests or activities in common (such as friendship, kinship, work) and that allow the contact between them, so that they can communicate and exchange information.

The origin of social networks is quite recent, can be said to arise in 1995 with the creation of classmates.com, at the hands of American Randy Conrads. This social network sought to bring together former schoolmates, or universities.

in 2002, websites appear promoting the network with the arrival of sites such as Friendster, Tribe.net, MySpace, Ecademy, Soflow and LinkedIn, among others, there were more than 200 social networking sites. Since then several networks have been created, some remain and others have disappeared. Now the main competitors are: Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, Pinterest, among others.
